Make the Most of the Space Above—and Below
An upper-level deck creates a unique opportunity: outdoor living space on two levels.
When waterproofing is planned properly from the beginning, the area below the deck can become much more than exposed framing. Depending on the project, it can remain a simple dry, covered area or be developed into a fully finished outdoor space with ceilings, lighting, fans, entertainment features and more.
The key is planning the deck, waterproofing and drainage together—not treating them as separate pieces after the fact.
Trex RainEscape® Waterproofing
Trex RainEscape is an under-deck drainage system installed above the joists, beneath the finished decking. Water is directed through a system of troughs and downspouts before it reaches the framing and space below.
As a TrexPro® Platinum contractor, we have extensive experience installing RainEscape as part of our upper-level deck projects.
But the system itself is only part of a successful installation. Planning where the water goes, how the system connects at the house, gutter locations, stairs, posts and the finished ceiling below all need to be considered as part of the overall project.

Dry, Covered Space
RainEscape creates a protected area below the deck that can remain relatively simple while providing useful covered outdoor space.
Finished Ceilings & Lighting
Tongue-and-groove ceilings, integrated lighting, fans and other finishing details can transform the underside of the deck into a much more intentional space.
Complete Outdoor Living Areas
For larger projects, the space can be developed further with features such as entertainment walls, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, bars and other custom elements.
Waterproofing Is Only as Good as the Details
A successful waterproof deck requires more than installing a drainage product. The structure, slope, house connection, trough layout, downspouts, gutter location and finished elements below all have to work together.
Because we build the deck itself as well as the waterproofing system, we're able to consider those details from the beginning of the project rather than trying to fit a waterproofing solution into a deck that wasn't designed around it.
